Coping with a Lack of Control

A common frustration for many students and families right now is the feeling that life is simply out of control. We have no control over the current pandemic the world is experiencing, nor the resulting effects it is having on school and our daily routine. As many of us know, routine is important in the daily lives of students; it allows students to foster habits that help them towards their long-term plans and goals. But when something like a global pandemic hits, the routines of many students undoubtedly change leaving them feeling anxious, frustrated, and stressed. These feelings are normal. Fortunately, there are ways students can lessen the stress/anxiety or ease the pressure on themselves if the lack of control is affecting their mood.

· Limit media consumption

· Practice self-care (e.g., adequate sleep, regular exercise, eating well, etc)

· Make time to unwind and do activities of enjoyment

· Seek out social support. Simply turning on a webcam can help students feel more connected.

· Establish a “new” routine. Get up, get ready for the day, go to be bed and do schoolwork at same time.

· Remind yourself it’s not permanent

Below are links to resources to help students and families deal with feelings that can result from a lack of control.
